Brent oil prices edged lower on Tuesday morning, with the December contract trading around $105 per barrel. The retreat comes as investors weigh the prospect of some relief on the supply side against the risk of further disruptions to oil flows from the Middle East. Despite the modest decline, geopolitical uncertainty continues to limit the downside. The prospect of additional Russian diesel exports is providing some relief to energy markets, following Washington's decision to temporarily ease sanctions on Russian fuel. However, the volumes involved are relatively modest, and damage to Russian refining capacity raises questions about how much additional supply can realistically reach the market. Meanwhile, the proposed ceasefire covering Russian and Ukrainian energy infrastructure remains uncertain, limiting its potential impact on prices. At the same time, tensions in the Middle East remain elevated following a series of Houthi attacks on Saudi airports and reported attacks on oil facilities, alongside continued threats to regional energy supplies and shipping routes. These developments continue to fuel concerns over the security of energy infrastructure and the possibility of further disruptions. Against this backdrop, the geopolitical risk premium is likely to remain an important source of support for oil prices. Although the prospect of additional Russian fuel supplies could provide some short-term relief, the market remains particularly sensitive to developments in the Persian Gulf. Any further escalation could quickly push prices higher, while signs of de-escalation and a sustained recovery in regional exports would create scope for a more sustained decline in prices.
