Gold Drops Below $4,200 as Fed Rate Hike Bets and Yields Rise

September 28, 2026

Gold prices fell sharply in early Monday trading, dropping below $4,200 per ounce and reaching their lowest level since early August, as the precious metal continues to face pressure from rising expectations of further monetary tightening by the Federal Reserve. Renewed tensions between the United States and Iran have pushed oil prices higher, adding to inflationary pressures and expectations that the Fed will raise interest rates again. Recent comments from Fed officials have reinforced this outlook, while US Treasury yields remain elevated, increasing the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets such as gold. The scale of the decline is particularly notable given that the US dollar is also trading lower this morning and geopolitical uncertainty in the Middle East remains elevated, two factors that would normally provide some support to bullion. This suggests that interest rate expectations and elevated bond yields are currently dominating the market. Against this backdrop, traders will keep a close eye on developments in the US-Iran war, particularly through their impact on oil prices and inflation expectations. Attention will also turn to a busy week for US economic data, with the release of PCE inflation, the Fed’s preferred inflation gauge, on Wednesday, followed by non-farm payrolls on Friday. Both releases could have a significant impact on expectations for the Fed’s next moves and, consequently, on gold prices.
