Gold Holds Above $4,000 Ahead of PCE Data

Gold prices remained under pressure in early trading on Thursday, hovering just above $4,000 per ounce, as investors assessed the implications of the Federal Reserve's latest monetary policy decision. The US central bank left interest rates unchanged on Wednesday, but adopted a hawkish tone, highlighting persistent inflationary pressures and leaving the door open to further monetary tightening. The decision reinforced expectations that US interest rates could remain elevated for longer, weighing on the appeal of non-interest-bearing assets such as gold.

The Fed's cautious approach reflects concerns that inflation remains stubbornly above its 2% target, with elevated oil prices, driven by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, contributing to upward pressure on consumer prices. The prospect of further interest rate increases has helped sustain elevated US Treasury yields, increasing the opportunity cost of holding gold. Although geopolitical uncertainty continues to provide some underlying support through safe-haven demand, this has so far been insufficient to offset the pressure associated with restrictive monetary policy expectations.

Against this backdrop, attention will turn to today's release of US PCE inflation data, the Fed's preferred inflation gauge, which could provide further indications of the likely direction of monetary policy. A stronger-than-expected reading would reinforce expectations of additional tightening, potentially pushing gold below the psychologically important $4,000 threshold. Conversely, a weaker-than-expected reading could put downward pressure on Treasury yields and the dollar, providing some relief for the precious metal.
