Bloom Energy: Meme Stock, Momentum Trade or Real Opportunity?

Darren Sinden
May 12, 2026

I wrote the bulk of this article on Monday, 13-04-2026, well ahead of the news from Bloom Energy.

Sometimes a stock becomes a metaphor for a popular market narrative or meme.

Or perhaps I should say that it starts as a narrative, but once it is widely adopted, it becomes a meme.

What I mean here is that the nuance in the narrative can get lost along the way, as successive rounds of traders pick up on the story or idea.

Of course, that needn't matter to early adopters and or those who have done their research/background reading, and in some cases, it could actually work to their advantage.

However, we always need to make sure that we aren’t “tail end charlie”, that is, the last one into these stocks, because, like it or not, they are all about momentum, and that inevitably involves the greater fool theory:

“The Greater Fool Theory suggests investors can profit from buying overvalued assets—regardless of their intrinsic value—if they sell them later to a "greater fool" at a higher price. It is a market strategy based on speculation and momentum, often driving financial bubbles, where participants hope to sell before the market”

A Question of Judgement

“Every time I don't buy Bloom Energy in a dip, I cry. $117 last week to $155 today,”

A quote from a trader on an equity-focused Discord I contribute to.

Bloom Energy BE US, which makes fuel cell power sources for on-site power generation at data centres, sprang into life in July 2025,

Since then, the price has risen by some +1600.00%.

Access to power is once again seen as the major bottleneck to data centre construction, so it may be that BE US can run higher from here.

Here is a snapshot of analysts' comments on Bloom Energy, from the summer of 2024 to the present date.

There was a dramatic change of attitude among analysts between July and October 2025.

JP Morgan rated the stock as a buy in July with a $24.00 price target.

However, by October, Evercore had published an upgrade with a $152.00 target, and in February this year, JP Morgan raised its price target to $166.00.

Even now, after that stellar run, analysts are still divided on the stock, which only manages a consensus rating of moderate buy among the 25 firms that cover Bloom Energy. When one might have expected a “strong buy” recommendation.

Bloom Energy announced a contract win from Oracle late in the session on 13-04-2026, and having closed at $177.54, they went on to print another +15.0% higher at $203.78 in the pre-market on Tuesday, 15-04-2026.

Sometimes you need to rely on your intuition and judgement, which, after all, is what trading really boils down to.

Our trading plan and rules are there to guide us, but we make the final decision about whether to trade or not.

I often talk about tilting the odds in a trade in your favour,  to get the best chance of successa nd this was one of those occasions.

If we look at the way that Bloom Energy had traded since the end of March, we can see a clear bias to the upside, which looked right to back and to my mind, that was slanted in favour of a long trade.

In the next article, we will look at how we can tell when a narrative/meme is fading and how traders can try to take advantage of that.

Don't forget that most of the tools and data I use to surface ideas and opportunities, and to research stocks, are available to the public for free. It's largely just a question of application and working smarter after that.
